What is a Western Undergraduate Exchange?

Founded in 1987, the Western Undergraduate Exchange is a tuition reduction program that the Western Interstate Commission Higher Education (WICHE) administers to students. WUE enables students from one of the 16 WICHE states in the Western US to enroll as none-residents in 160+ participating colleges and universities.

Through WUE, eligible students can choose from numerous undergraduate programs outside their home state. The program is not run on need-based tuition. needless to say, many students want to take advantage of a more pocket-friendly education.

WUE allows out-of-state students to receive a huge tuition discount. Normally, they pay less than 150% of the in-state tuition rate. The regular rate can amount to 300% of the standard rate. Each participating school is allowed to administer the WUE tuition reduction according to their rules.

How can I get an Undergraduate Exchange?

In this section, we are going to discuss how you can get into a WUE program. If you’re a resident of one of the states listed below, you may be eligible for tuition savings at any participating WUE schools. First and foremost, you must determine if the schools on your student’s list offer WUE tuition discounts. Let’s not forget, you must live in one of the WICHE member states and attend a participating school in another WICHE state to participate in the program. The WICHE member states include:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • South Dakota
  • Utah
  • Washington
  • Wyoming
  • The Northern Mariana Islands.

You can only apply for the WUE program through the school you plan to attend and not through WICHE. As mentioned earlier, each school is allowed to administer WUE applications according to its rules and regulations. There is no common WUE application. Some schools also have eligibility requirements or annual quotas found in their WUE savings Finder profile.

WUE admission requirements may vary from general admissions requirements, ensuring you confirm all program requirements directly with your student’s WUE school. Keep in mind that first-degree undergraduates are a top priority.

Students are required to declare their intent to be disciplined throughout the course. After this, you are encouraged to submit a WUE contract. Let’s not forget the College application Essay which is an important part of your application.

What Next?

Each institution will provide you with the specific WUE scholarship eligibility requirements. The only standard need for all institutions is that you should be a resident of one of the WICHE states as stated above. If you have more questions, you can always contact the school’s administration to where you are applying. Some institutions automatically consider applicants from WICHE state, but many require applicants to request the rates while applying for admission.

The majority of WUE schools offer the program to first-year students. For transfer students you will have to meet the criteria below:

  • A GPA( Grade Point Average) of 3.00 or better in all transferrable college units completed
  • A good discipline record from your last College/University.
  • Have completed the golden four courses with a grade of C- or better. The golden fours include oral communication, written communication, critical thinking, and college-level mathematics/quantitative reasoning.

Most institutions extend the WUE rate to a student for a school’s typical minimum graduation interval. This is two years for an associate’s degree program or four years for a bachelor’s degree program. To always remain eligible to receive the WUE discount, you must remain in good academic standing. Most schools require a minimum amount of credit hours per semester. Each participating school will outline its specific educational requirements for maintaining WUE eligibility.

It is essential to apply for WUE by standard pre-term admission deadlines. You can always contact the relevant office at your institution to see if they can grant you the WUE post-enrollment.
